Valheim dedicated hosting — modded vs vanilla (2026)
Same Viking world, two different bills. Vanilla + a few friends can sit on a 3–4 GB plan. Once you add BepInEx packs (ValheimPlus, Epic Loot, creature mods), plan more RAM — and pick a host that makes mod installs boring instead of a weekend project.
The job: private Valheim for a friend group
- Players: about 2–8 concurrent. Valheim’s practical soft ceiling is near 10; most friend Discord worlds are well under that.
- Vanilla path: stock dedicated server, maybe world modifiers via the host panel. World age (bases, terraforming, tame animals) grows RAM more than raw player count.
- Modded path: BepInEx on server and matching client mods (Thunderstore). QoL-only is lighter; content/loot/creature packs need headroom.
- Always-on: yes for rotating schedules. Wake-and-play / hibernate plans save money if the squad plays on a fixed night.
- Region: closest datacenter to most of the Discord. Night 4 goes deeper on AU/NZ.
Rule of thumb we use below: 3–4 GB for fresh/vanilla friend worlds; 6 GB+ once the world matures or you add light BepInEx; 8 GB+ for heavy modpacks. Hosts publish their own slot charts — treat ours as a filter, not physics.
Modded vs vanilla — what actually changes
- Vanilla: cheaper entry plans work. Shockbyte’s 3 GB Eikthyr and Apex’s 2 GB entry exist for this path — upgrade when the world file gets heavy.
- Light mods (QoL / ValheimPlus / UI): stay on the same host family, bump RAM. Prefer panels that ship BepInEx / ValheimPlus toggles (Shockbyte, Bisect, Apex all advertise this).
- Heavy packs: look at 6–8 GB tiers before you install. PebbleHost’s Valheim plan caps at up to 5 GB — fine for vanilla, a ceiling for serious modding.
- Crossplay: several hosts advertise PC + console crossplay on Valheim 1.0. Crossplay + mods is a research rabbit hole — confirm before you promise the Xbox friends a Thunderstore pack.

How much RAM — vanilla vs modded
- Fresh vanilla, 2–5 friends: host starter tiers at 3–4 GB are the common entry (Shockbyte 3 GB, Apex 2–4 GB, Nodecraft 4 GB).
- Mature vanilla world: bases, portals, tames, and terraforming push usage up — budget a bump to 6 GB before lag becomes “mysterious.”
- Light BepInEx / ValheimPlus: plan 6–8 GB so you are not upgrading mid-boss-fight.
- Heavy content packs: 8 GB+ is the realistic floor (Apex’s 8 GB tier exists for this). PebbleHost’s 5 GB cap is the wrong tool here.
- Slots marketing: Shockbyte’s 4 / 7 / 10 player labels are guidance, not a physics guarantee. Entities + exploration drive cost more than the Discord headcount.
Practical shortlist (not rankings)
- Vanilla now, maybe ValheimPlus later: Shockbyte Eikthyr → Bonemass → Yagluth ladder, or Apex 4 GB with a clear 8 GB modded step.
- Want one-click BepInEx: shortlist BisectHosting — only after a location you can use is in stock.
- Lowest flat vanilla bill: PebbleHost $7.99 / up to 5 GB — accept the ceiling.
- Squad plays one night a week: Nodecraft Lite Wake & Play 4 GB; switch to Premium if people join randomly.
- Cheapest $/GB experiment: GameTeam — verify region first for Oceania squads.
