Best Minecraft server hosting for a small friend group (2026)

You’re not launching a public network. You want 4–8 friends online after work, maybe Paper + a few plugins, maybe a light modpack later — and if half the squad is in AU/NZ, the host’s Oceania location matters more than a flashy homepage.

The job: small private world

  • Players: about 4–8 concurrent (unlimited-slot marketing is noise for this size).
  • Software: Vanilla / Paper / Purpur first; light Fabric or a small Forge pack later.
  • Always-on: yes — free hibernating hosts are fine for testing, painful when friends join at random hours.
  • Region: pick the datacenter closest to most of the squad. US East is fine for US groups; Sydney / Australia for AU+NZ.

Rule of thumb we use below: 2–4 GB for Paper survival with light plugins; 4–6 GB once you add medium modpacks; 8 GB+ for heavy packs (ATM, big Create stacks). Hosts often publish their own RAM charts — treat ours as a starting filter, not physics.

Comparison: hosts for a small friend group

Figures below are from official pricing / product pages (checked Oct 2026). Promotional first-month prices are noted separately. Taxes, currency localisation (AUD for AU visitors), and stock of AU nodes can change — confirm at checkout.

How much RAM for 4–8 friends?

  • Vanilla / Paper survival, light plugins: start at 2–4 GB. Most small squads are fine on 4 GB with headroom.
  • Medium modpacks (~25–50 mods): plan 4–6 GB (Shockbyte’s own light/medium guidance sits in this band).
  • Heavy packs (RLCraft, big ATM, etc.): 8 GB+ is the realistic floor — this page’s “small friend group” budget often breaks here.
  • Slots marketing: “unlimited slots” does not mean unlimited performance. Concurrent players + view distance + entities drive RAM/CPU.

Oceania / AU–NZ wedge

If most of the Discord is in Australia or New Zealand, prefer hosts that list an Australia / Sydney / Melbourne node and ping-test before paying for a year. Shockbyte (AU company + AU location), Apex (Sydney), Bisect (Sydney — watch stock), Nodecraft (Sydney & Melbourne), and PebbleHost (Sydney) all advertise AU presence. Bisect’s Sydney page has shown out-of-stock / waitlist states — treat location as a checkout checkbox, not a promise from a blog table.

Night 4 will go deeper on AU/NZ-only comparisons. Until then: buy monthly, measure ping with the whole squad for a week, then commit.

Practical shortlist (not rankings)

  • AU/NZ Paper friends, want easy modpacks later: shortlist Shockbyte 4 GB and Apex 4 GB — compare live ping + panel feel.
  • Lowest list $/GB with Sydney listed: PebbleHost Budget 4 GB — upgrade path to Premium if CPU-bound.
  • Price ladder + many locations: BisectOne 4 GB — confirm Sydney available on the day you buy.
  • May switch games in a few months: Nodecraft’s game-swap story (also Night 6) — pay attention to Wake & Play vs 24/7.
  • Trying hosting cheap with AI-assisted mod installs: GameTeam Budget — verify region fits your squad first.
