Terraria dedicated hosting for a small friend group: vanilla and tModLoader (2026)

Terraria is light compared with Minecraft modpacks. Vanilla for 4–8 friends runs on very little RAM. tModLoader packs like Calamity and Thorium change that. Below: slots, tModLoader support, Oceania locations and real entry prices, with each price source labelled.

Slots and RAM for a small squad

  • Vanilla or tShock, 4–8 players: about 2 GB. Watch the slot caps: Shockbyte’s 2 GB Vanilla plan is listed for 4 players.
  • tModLoader, light mods: 2–4 GB.
  • Calamity + Thorium or other large packs: 4 GB as a starting point. Hosts market 6 GB for heavy packs or bigger groups.
  • tModLoader versions must match: server and clients need the same tModLoader build and mod versions.

Oceania note

Terraria handles ping better than shooters, but boss fights and item pickup still feel bad above about 150 ms. Shockbyte, Nodecraft (Sydney and Melbourne), and Bisect when it has stock advertise AU nodes. See the Oceania ping guide.

Budget note and shortlist (not rankings)

  • Vanilla, 4 friends: Shockbyte Vanilla $4.99. Above 4 players you need a bigger tier.
  • tModLoader + Calamity, 5–12 friends: Shockbyte Modded $9.99 or Bisect 4 GB ($11.99³).
  • Casual play in AU/NZ: Nodecraft Lite hibernates when nobody’s on and can be cheaper. Use Pro for 24/7.
  • Every confirmed option fits well under the ~$20/mo budget. Mod tooling compared on Night 6.
